NO ON NJ S810: Airsoft in NJ in politicians crosshairs

Post by Shogun Mitsu »

It was brought to my attention today that the sport of airsoft is once again under attack by politicians, this time the battle field is here in the north east in the once airsoft friendly state of New Jersey. The powers that be are making an attempt to classify ALL airsoft guns as firearms, making it illegal to own, sell or transport airsoft guns in New Jersey without having the proper firearms permits & or licenses. This I would believe can classify any airsofter without the necessary paperwork a felon in the judicial system in NJ, a move that would ELIMINATE alot of airsofters from New York being the amount of hoops needed to jump through just to be considered for the permits & or licenses required. This is a battle that belongs to each and everyone of us here. Our weapons for this battle you ask? The pen or the mouse, the choice is yours. Please use your weapon accordingly & respectfully.

f. "Firearm" means any handgun, rifle, shotgun, machine gun, automatic or semi-automatic rifle, or any gun, device or instrument in the nature of a weapon from which may be fired or ejected any solid projectable ball, slug, pellet, missile or bullet, or any gas, vapor or other noxious thing, by means of a cartridge or shell or by the action of an explosive or the igniting of flammable or explosive substances. It shall also include, without limitation, any firearm which is in the nature of an air gun, spring gun or pistol or other weapon of a similar nature in which the propelling force is a spring, elastic band, carbon dioxide, compressed or other gas or vapor, air or compressed air, or is ignited by compressed air, and ejecting a bullet or missile, including any polymer ball or pellet or metallic-coated polymer ball or pellet, smaller than three-eighths of an inch in diameter, with sufficient force to injure a person.
This bill should never be allowed to pass. It's way too broadly written. Based on this definition, NERF guns or sling shots as they are devices that send a "missile."

Spit Balls are next along with "jacks" because they look like little throwing stars... Paper should be outlawed too. I'm tired of paper cuts.

I guess they will classify Nerf launchers as Destructive Devices, just to try & push this law forward. I honestly dont see it going anywhere, unless they re-write the entire bill.

I know I'm a little late on this. But it doesn't say anywhere in this about electrically operated systems. So Case in Point an AEG by this definition isn't classified as a firearm.

The use of the term 'electro operated system' is not required for this bill to effect AEG's. An AEG propells a plastic (polymer) BB by comprssed air from a piston, powered by a spring. The fact that the piston is retracted by gears and an electric motor is moot. By the bill's broad definition, airsoft guns could be classified as a firearm because of the words used to define "Firearm". See here:
