Do-it-yourself Ops-core Fast bump helmet

Post by Shogun Mitsu »

My version of the Ops-core Fast bump style helmet.

Image
A side by side comparison of the Opscore Fast Bump helmet (left), & my version (right).

You will need the following items:

Image
Dremel rotary tool with cutting bit & sanding bands

Image
Airsoft tactical or Protec style helmet (http://www.airsoftpost.com/product_info ... s_id=27259) or (http://www.protechelmet.com/products.asp?cat=14)

Image
Opscore head-loc retention system (optional) http://www.ops-core.com/ACH_Head-Loc_84 ... __P2C5.cfm

Image
Msa type rail system & vas shroud (night vision/rhino arm mount) http://shop.ehobbyasia.com/combat-gears ... l-tan.html or http://airsoft-club.com/shop/tactical-g ... lmet-black
http://shop.ehobbyasia.com/combat-gears ... black.html (both items can be found at either Ehobbyasia.com or airsoft-club.com)
Keep in mind that the Opscore VAS shroud has a bit more of a curve to it then the copies from the sites provided. I have both the Opscore original & the copy, & they both sit differently on the helmet because of this curve at the top. I think the copy is easier to work with because it lays flush on almost any helmet, I believe they did this so the mount can be used only with there helmets or a ach/mich type helmet.

Image
Optional accessories available ONLY from Opscore.com (I have been looking for aftermarket Picatinny rails & accessories, but have had no luck.)

So now after gathering the items needed to transform a dull regular "Hey, I have that helmet also" into "HOLY CRAP! THAT'S A BAD A** HELMET!" you'll need to do the following:

First you have to remove the retention system, but if your not going to replace it you'll want to go easy so you can re-use it later. Use a needle nose plier to loosen the rivets that hold it in place, & don't worry about bending these rivets because they will be replaced with the screws that come with the rail system.

Next you will find a proper position on the helmet for the rail & make a guide line using a Sharpie.
ImageImage
Using safety glasses (SAFETY FIRST!), drill pilot holes just below the Sharpie line on the part of the helmet you are cutting off (The more holes, the easier the cut will be). Don't worry about the previous holes used for the retention system, as they will have no use after attaching the new rail system.

Next, you will use the same bit to cut off the part below the pilot holes. Try to use a medium rpm setting on your rotary tool, so the tool does not get unmanageable while you follow the pilot holes. After the cuts are done, you will use the sanding band to smooth out the cuts & round off the edges as they will be SHARP! If your helmet has ridges in the shell as mine did, you will need to sand the small ridge towards the front of the helmet so the rail will lay properly at the front. Try to avoid leaving sharp corners. Even though the rail may cover them, it is still possible to fray the retention system over time.

Image
Check for any uneven parts that may fall too far below the rail, after all we are trying to make the look as authentic as possible.
Mark the holes on the helmet through the rail for the anchor screws, these screws will also be your new attachment point for the retention system. Using the same bit used for the pilot holes, make new anchor holes. Start with small holes, because it much easier to drill a bit wider then it is to shrink the holes. ;)

Finally, you will place the VAS shroud on the front of the helmet about a half inch above the lip & mark your mounting holes (The mounting screws are very slim, so be sure to use a SMALLER BIT!). You can place it right at the lip, but the original Opscore helmet has the nvg mount about a half inch above the lip.

Now that you are confident in the locations of your rail & nvg mount, attach them & check out your work. You may find some areas where the rails are located may need a bit more sanding, so don't attach the retention system just yet.

At this point you should be happy with the results, or hiding in the bushes at one of Moondog's next games ready to pounce out & kill me.

This is the point where your personal touch comes in... CHOOSING YOUR PAINT JOB!

I personally like the look & function of Multicam, but have recently been testing my painting skills with the A-tacs pattern with VERY little success, so its Multicam or Devgru type paint jobs for me until further notice. There are many options for paint, & it all boils down to what kits you own & what pattern would work best for you. When you are done with paint & the project has dried completely for a minimum of 24 hrs, You will attach your adhesive velcro to the helmet where you would like to mount your patches. I will supply a tutorial for a few patterns I have done soon, & hopefully it can help you achieve the look you want. For now I will just supply images of the different patterns I have done. Remember to have fun with it, & get creative. You'll be happy to wear your helmet! :D

Thanks Megatank, it fits & works awesome. Its sits nice & sturdy with zero wobble or movement even with all my go go gadgets attached. It has to be in the Opscore retention system, I'm glad I didn't cheap skate on that part! ;)

next paycheck I'm gonna attempt to make one of these. Wish me luck because I'm terrible at this kind of thing.
